Praetorian Team

Introduced in Dropzone Commander

The Praetorian Special Forces are in an entirely different league from standard Legionnaires. While their equipment is similar to that utilised by the ordinary infantry, the Praetorians are the epitome of the elite soldier. Ascension to their ranks in through extended service and merit only.

They are deadly warriors through skill and aggression, not through exotic wargear, and are specialists in room clearance, CQB and clandestine operations. Praetorians shun the open battlefield, where their skills are of little use against superior firepower.

Praetorians favour the Raven Light Dropship as their transport of choice, since it provides a high speed route to their objective. Praetorians are trained to fast-rope from these aerial platforms directly onto their objectives, increasing the element of surprise before their devastating assault.

Version History

Dropzone Commander (2012)

Name Mv CM A Dp CQB F Type Category S+C Pts Special
Praetorian Team 2” A 2 5 3 3+ Infantry Exotic 2/3 58 Dodge 4+4), Fast Roping
Weapons M&F Arc R(F) R(C) Sh Ac E Special
UM-3 SMG Special 2“ F/S/R 12” 6“ 10 2+ 2 RW-25)

Transport: 1x Raven Light Dropship (2 units only) or 1x Bear APC (3 units only). In addition may share 1x Condor Medium Dropship with another Praetorian Squad, providing they are both mounted in Bear APCs.

Fast Roping: Praetorians are adept at descending by rope straight onto the roof of a target building, facilitating rapid entry. They may disembark from an aerial transport directly into a structure, when the transport is above the structure (i.e. positioned over the roof). This works in exactly the same way as disembarking a ground transport directly into a structure. The aerial transport does not need to Land to achieve this. There doesn't have to be an obvious entrance on the roof - these guys carry breaching charges!

Dropzone Commander Errata v1.5 (2012-08-15)

Active Countermeasures removed Typo Correction

Dropzone Commander v1.1 (2013-07-24)

Unit cost reduced from 58 to 48pts

Beta v2.4.1 (2018-05-02)

Fast Roping rewritten and became Fast Roping-4”
If they are aboard an aerial Transport and have not Embarked into it this turn, they may use the Fast Roping rule. If they are Disembarking, their Transport may move up to an additional X” more than it would normally be allowed to (up to its maximum Mv value) before they Disembark. The aerial Transport does not Land when using this rule. They may Disembark directly into a Structure or Forest, when their Transport is above it. This works in exactly the same way as Disembarking a ground Transport directly into the Structure or Forest. There doesn’t have to be an entrance on the roof of a Structure either, as troops with such training will always be carrying breaching charges!

Battle for Earth v2.0 (2019-06-17)

Fortitude value increased from 3+ to 2+

CQB 3 changed to the following weapon profile

Weapons M&F Arc R(F) R(C) Sh Ac E Special
SMG Close - F/S/R CQ CQ 15 - 2 Alt-16), RW-3
Grenades - F/S/R CQ CQ 5 - 4 Alt-1, RW-1

Standard BfE Changes Not Detailed

Balance Pass v2.3 (2020-09-25)

Unit cost reduced from 48 to 40pts

Grenades Energy increased from 4 to 6

Designer Notes

We’ve had an issue getting these balanced for some time. After feedback and testing we’ve made some changes. First they have had a price drop to 40 points a base. Secondly their Grenades are now Energy 6. Hopefully this should help Praetorians get more use on the table.
1)
This unit gains a Passive Countermeasures save equal to the X value against Close Quarters weapons and Collateral Damage.
2)
This unit may disembark from Aerial Transports that haven’t landed. Some units with this rule will have a number listed after. An Aerial Transport they’re embarked in can move and still disembark this unit +X“ (up to its maximum MV value). They may also disembark straight into a Garrison from any direction, regardless of whether it has an entrance point. If this unit shoots with Close Quarters weapons in the turn it enters a Garrison via this rule, it doesn’t have to re-roll successful damage rolls.
3) , 6)
Weapons with the same ALT-X number can only fire one profile each round.
4)
Units with a Dodge value may attemp to evade hits in a CQB in the same manner as with Passive Countermeasures. Units with both Passive Countermeasures and a Dodge value may use both in succession.
5)
Reduced Weapons - The number of shots this weapon may fire is as follows: Shots = Original Sh value - (Dp lost x RW value).
